Meet=20
your Southern California SWANA Board=20
Member
Serving=20
as Public Director
 Khalil=20
Gharios City=20
of Los Angeles, Bureau of Sanitation =
What=20
do you do in your real job (as opposed to your job as =
a Board=20
member)?=20
At=20
my real job, I work for the City of Los Angeles where =
I serve=20
as Division Manager for the Bureau of Sanitation's =
Solid=20
Resources Processing & Construction Division. My =
primary=20
responsibilities include determining the polices, =
budget=20
requirements, methods and procedures of Engineering =
and=20
planning for the operations and maintenance of five =
Solid=20
waste landfills, three yard trimmings processing and=20
composting facilities, and a solid waste recycling and =
transfer station.
How did you end up in the =
solid waste=20
industry?
It started as a promotional =
opportunity.=20
After graduating from college, I worked for eight =
years as a=20
Project Engineer in the wastewater treatment industry. =
In=20
1991, I was promoted to oversee the expansion of the =
City of=20
LA Lopez Canyon Landfill. Since then I moved up the =
career=20
ladder to my current position. I have enjoyed working =
in the=20
solid waste industry so much that I intent to stay in =
the=20
waste business for a long =
time. Any=20
words of wisdom for Chapter=20
members? I found that the =
most=20
important tool to advance and learn in this business =
is the=20
networking and sharing experiences and ideas with =
other=20
colleagues in the industry. That was the reason I =
joined SWANA=20
and volunteered to be on the board of its founding =
chapter.=20
For the short term I have been a member, I have =
already=20
developed a large network of friends and business =
colleagues=20
in the industry. You can do the same by joining and=20
volunteering. =20
SWANA=20
Member Profile
Roy =
Barbatti=20
If=20
you were to ask Roy Barbatti what draws him to his =
profession,=20
he would smile widely, look you right in the eye, and =
simply=20
reply, =93I just love being a garbage =
man.=94 Roy=20
isn't using the term =91love=92 lightly. For =
him, =91love=92 is=20
an action verb; a day-in, day-out act of will and =
dedication=20
that comes from a deep enthusiasm for the friends, =
family and=20
business of waste management. After all, Roy, =
who has=20
worked in the industry for over 45 years, is not a man =
distinguished by words alone, but by actions rooted in =
an=20
impassioned commitment to selflessly serving the =
people around=20
him.
Roy=92s=20
journey started in the bustling Italian neighborhoods =
of=20
Oakland, California. As a child, he enjoyed more =
than=20
his share of spaghetti dinners with the future leaders =
of the=20
waste management industry; a community of friends and =
families=20
rich in tradition, work ethic, and undying allegiance =
to each=20
other =96 a tradition he has continued to build upon =
as the=20
years have passed.=20
Roy=20
entered full-time into waste management when he =
started=20
working for his father-in-law at a hauling company out =
of Palm=20
Desert, California. He served there for many =
years=20
before continuing on to Dempster and a top position at =
Crane=20
Carrier, a leading manufacturer of heavy duty vehicles =
located=20
in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After over 20 years at Crane =
and a=20
brief retirement, Roy chose to come back and take over =
as=20
National Sales Manager for Intec Video Systems,=20
Inc.=20
At=20
age 67, Roy is now widely considered as one of the =
most=20
well-known, well-liked businessmen in the =
industry. He=20
is heavily involved with S.W.A.N.A. (Solid Waste =
Association=20
of North America), where he is one of only eleven =
constituents=20
to receive their coveted Life Membership Award. He is=20
certainly one of the Southern California Founding =
Chapters=20
longest members, having joined the GRCDA in 1966. He =
is also=20
an S.W.P.D (Solid Waste Processing Division) =93Old =
Timer=94, an=20
influential group of waste management professionals =
honored=20
for their extensive years of experience. There =
is no=20
doubt that Roy is popular across the country; he can =
literally=20
pick up the phone and get an appointment with any =
hauler or=20
city at the drop of a hat. How has he done =
it? =20
Once again, Roy=92s answer gets right to the heart of =
it: =93I=20
believe in being a friend to those you sell to, but =
before=20
that sale ever happens, you have to earn the right to =
be a=20
friend.=94
That=92s=20
exactly what Roy has been doing the past 45 years: =
earning=20
it. He=92s earned respect, admiration, and =
loyalty among=20
his peers; because in the end, what makes Roy Barbatti =
so=20
unique is that he will do everything in his power to =
help=20
others, but expects absolutely nothing in =
return. He is=20
a wonderful husband, father and friend who is =
incredibly=20
generous, places great importance on intergenerational =
relationships and familial bonds within the industry, =
and=20
jumps at any chance to mentor someone in =
need.=20
