Now housed in the Natural Resources Agency, CalRecycle merges the duties of the board with those of DOC's Division of Recycling to best protect public health and the environment by effectively and efficiently managing California's waste disposal and recycling efforts.

CalRecycle is currently comprised of two program divisions: Waste Recovery and Recycling.
The Division of Waste Recovery continues to promote the goals of Zero Waste California in partnership with local government, industry and the public. The division manages the approximate 93 million tons of waste generated each year by reducing whenever possible, decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting the management of all materials to their highest and best use, and regulating the handling, processing and disposal of solid waste.

The department's Division of Recycling manages California's Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Reduction Act, which was enacted in 1986. This division works to achieve and maintain high recycling rates for a variety of beverage container types and is responsible for recycling program certification, registration, compliance, administration, and promotion.

In addition to the hundreds of program and policy experts at CalRecycle, Gov. Schwarzenegger has designated a leadership team to help the department continue California's tradition of advancing environmental stewardship. Margo Reid Brown, former chair of the CIWMB, serves as CalRecycle chief deputy director and is designated as acting director. Tom Estes is the department's deputy director for administration; Alicia McGee is deputy director for communications and public affairs, Jason Marshal is deputy director for recycling; Elliot Block is deputy director for legal affairs, Lisa Macumber is deputy director for legislative affairs and Mark Leary is deputy director for waste management.

We invite you to visit our new Web site, www.calrecycle.ca.gov, to access important information available to California consumers, businesses, recycling and waste-hauling industries, nonprofit organizations, educational facilities, and others. scale. Solid waste managers should consider using the popularity of these sites to spread information about solid waste programs within their municipalities. These tools can be used to spread information about particular solid waste campaigns, beneficial public programs or general education about solid waste issues. Although there are many social networking sites that can be used for the purpose of promoting solid waste programs, Facebook and Twitter have been useful tools in promoting solid waste programs in the City of Los Angeles.

Municipalities have an obligation to maintain a public presence in communities they serve. An extension of that obligation is fulfilled when municipalities maintain a virtual presence online through a Facebook page. Facebook is used by members to update friends on their personal status. The City established a Facebook page for the Multifamily Residential Recycling Program in August 2009. The Facebook page currently has over 450 fans receiving weekly status updates on solid waste programs such as mobile hazardous waste drop-off events, composting education workshops and clarification on acceptable blue bin materials. Every time a fan logs on to their Facebook account they can view a list of status updates from friends and fan sites, including the Program's Facebook status. Additionally, when a member requests to be a fan of the Program's Facebook page, their friends are notified about the connection to the Program. Furthermore, fans are encouraged to leave their comments and suggestions on solid waste on the Program's Facebook page. City staff answer submitted questions which can be viewed by the public on Facebook. The Program's current fan base includes union representatives, local and state elected officials and media reporters.

Twitter allows users to post real-time short messages of 140 characters to individuals following their "tweets". Although there is some overlap of users following Facebook and Twitter, the City has synched the Program's Facebook page to automatically copy status updates and submit them as tweets on the Program's Twitter account. Followers can also "retweet" or "RT" what was posted by City staff for their own followers. This allows a tweet to be viewed by potentially twice as many people through retweets. Followers can also submit tweeted questions to the City by starting their tweet with "@larecycles". When the Los Angeles Times recently started following the Program's tweets, the Program became one of 19,000 tweets the newspaper is currently following daily.

<span style='font-size:8.0pt; However, it can compliment traditional marketing approaches by reaching audiences that prefer to receive information digitally. Therefore, allowances will be traded until the marginal cost of emission reduction is equal across all covered sources. I was that incredibly talented and gifted young man, or so I thought, who went to college just long enough to know I had all the answers already. So two years in I took my AA degree in business and started a small business in manufacturing. In my defense I was at least able to see that as an owner just starting out with almost no money and no capital what you invested was your life, every waking moment of it, and after roughly five years I was in a doctor's office being told to find another line of work or check into the hospital. My father in law at that time worked for Mack Trucks and he said to come on down and join the union and work for Mack. I was in my twenties at the time and had started a family and while it was hard to give up the business, it was better than the alternative, so I started at Mack Trucks sweeping floors. Now before you start tearing up here, please realize it was a union job that paid very well for what little you did and my stress literally fell off the chart. I started to feel better and found that Mack Trucks had a "formula" for a person to become a manager and perhaps at some point to purchase and own a Mack Store. While that might sound a tad lofty I was still in my twenties, and remember I was still under the illusion of being that incredibly gifted young man, so please bear with me here. Mack's vision was for an individual to go through every department, Parts, Service and Sales so that they would have an in depth understanding of the entire store operation. I went through Parts and then Sales and was in Service when the local store was sold to a private group and my project with them came to an end. I stayed in service long enough to become a service manager for this new group but it quickly became apparent this new group of investors did not have the business skills required to keep the business going and I moved to sales. Then in a very short time I took a position at a Volvo dealer and thought that there would always be trash and there would always be municipalities collecting it, so perhaps there would always be a need for sales folks to assist people with their business plans and purchases. Time has passed and jobs have come and gone, but by the grace of God I am still here selling refuse equipment.

Any words of wisdom for Chapter Members?

I was once told by a very wise man that you only get out of something what you put into it.
