February, 2008 ENEWSLETTER
President's Message
by Grace Chan
Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts
The year 2008 started with a bang with one of the best-attended chapter workshops ever which was held at the Mission Inn in Riverside. We heard comprehensive presentations on climate control, sure to be a hot topic for the foreseeable future. I found it helpful to see an overview of the basics along with insights on potential impacts to our industry. We also enjoyed the eco-footprint competition! Thanks, as always, to the workshop planners, the speakers, the vendors, and the attendees. Mark your calendars now for the next chapter workshop to be held on April 24 in Long Beach. See this newsletter or our website (www.socalswana.org) for more details. And speaking of our website, if you have not yet seen our newly designed site, please take a look and let us know what you think. We want the site to be useful for our members. Here’s to a rewarding 2008!

Meet Your So Cal SWANA Board

Susan Moulton
Waste Management
Long Beach, CA
What do you do in your real job (as opposed to your job as a Board member)?
At my real job, I work at Waste Management as the Director of Public Sector Services for the Greater Los Angeles Market Area. My primary responsibilities include managing a team that work directly with City Governments and Staff to ensure that all regulatory and franchise requirements are met in our cities. Also, we are actively involved in increasing the environmental awareness of the communities that we serve through numerous programs.
How did you end up in the solid waste industry?
It was truly by accident. I had recently graduated from college and had relocated from Chicago to San Diego and was looking for work . I responded to an ad in the Sunday newspaper for a Customer Service Representative for Waste Management. I interviewed for the position and was hired. I have grown up in the industry and intend to stay in it for years to come. With the changing regulations and challenges that we face in this business, the job I have is never boring.
Any words of wisdom for Chapter members?
Get Involved and get to know your fellow Chapter members. Over the past 10 years as a Chapter member and Board member, I have developed a number business relationships and friendships through networking as a result of being involved in SWANA. Also, your fellow chapter members are a great resource. There are many ways to get more involved in Swana - Attend the workshops, request to be nominated to be a Board Member, volunteer, write articles for the newsletter, etc.
