The South Bayside Waste Management Authority (SBWMA) is
recruiting to fill its Commercial Recycling and Sustainability
Coordinator position. Candidates will be required to have a
background in commercial waste reduction, recycling and
sustainability programs. Applicants must demonstrate
competency in the following areas: coordinating and
implementing commercial recycling outreach and technical
assistance; ensuring compliance with municipal Franchise
Agreement provisions that relate to commercial recycling,
diversion, and customer service; coordinating and
implementing Venues and Events (V&E) and Construction
and Demolition (C&D) recycling programs; and, developing
and implementing a Climate Action Plan for the SBWMA.
This staff-level position serves as the SBWMAs commercial
recycling and sustainability expert for the agency, involving
a high degree of interaction with a wide variety of
audiences, such as the general public, and commercial,
institutional, and industrial waste generators. The
Commercial Recycling and Sustainability Coordinator is
responsible for managing franchise contractor
performance and compliance with programs to meet
diversion goals; providing assistance to member agencies;
and analyzing and recommending programs and policy
options regarding commercial recycling and climate change
initiatives.
Reporting to the Recycling Program Manager, the
incumbent will be a team player with strong skills, who
maximizes the effectiveness of commercial waste reduction
and recycling for the 12 member agencies. The key firstyear
priorities for this position are:
• Develop and implement a sector-based technical
assistance program and manage the Commercial
Recycling Outreach Program.
• Expand and implement the V&E and C&D programs to
ensure high levels of diversion.
• Develop and implement a Climate Action Plan.
Located between San Francisco and San Jose, bordering
San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean, San Mateo
County is graced with beauty, a variety of activities, and is
made up of twenty cities and towns. San Mateo County
includes a large unincorporated area, with mountains and
the Airport also falling under its jurisdiction. Gorgeous

THE ORGANIZATION
Formed in 1982, the South Bayside Waste Management
Authority (SBWMA) is a Joint Powers Agency with 12
member agencies that encompass an area in central and
southern San Mateo County. These member agencies
include the cities of Atherton, Belmont, Burlingame, East
Palo Alto, Foster City, Hillsborough, Menlo Park, Redwood
City, San Carlos, and San Mateo. The West Bay Sanitary
District and San Mateo County are also members. The
SBWMA Board of Directors is comprised of managers and
department directors from the member agencies. SBWMA
also owns a solid waste transfer station and materials
recovery facility (MRF). It contracts with Allied Waste
Services of San Mateo County for operation of the
transfer station and MRF, as well as collection services
for a population of 450,000 and 10,000 businesses.
SBWMA is a leader in innovative waste reduction and
recycling programs in the Bay Area. SBWMA also
recommends and implements policies that promote
resource conservation and sustainability programs.
THE POSITION THE COMMUNITY
The ideal candidate for the Commercial Recycling and
Sustainability Coordinator position will have excellent
interpersonal skills, and the ability to effectively communicate
with a variety of stakeholders and industry groups. The incumbent
will be required to handle multiple projects and serve as the
commercial recycling and sustainability expert for the agency.
The ideal candidate should possess a minimum of seven years of
professional recycling and/or sustainability program experience
including developing, implementing, and managing multiple
projects. Familiarity with commercial sales and providing
technical assistance to a wide variety of businesses is desirable.
Candidates should also possess equivalency of a bachelors
degree from an accredited college or university in environmental
studies, resource management, economics, engineering, business
administration, marketing, public administration, or a closely
related field.

Environmental Engineer
The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County is seeking environmental engineers for the solid waste management program. The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County is a West Coast metropolitan agency that provides environmentally sound and cost-effective wastewater and solid waste management for more than five million people. Our facilities, located throughout Southern California, including three sanitary landfills handling approximately 20,000 tons per day, including the largest in the nation; three closed landfills, two refuse-to-energy facilities; three materials recovery facilities/transfer stations; and multiple energy production facilities. Innovative projects in progress include a new remote landfill with intermodal transport of solid waste by rail and new energy recovery projects.
For environmental engineering positions, a master’s degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering or closely related engineering major is required and an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering is preferred. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree in a specialty area will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Of course, related professional-level experience and possession of a Professional Engineer license are valued.
