California’s recycling landscape is shifting fast, and programs need smart, practical tools to keep up. This workshop gives recycling leaders proven, behavioral‑science strategies to boost participation, cut contamination, and strengthen local programs.The session blends national research, California‑specific insights, and real case studies to help attendees design effective outreach, leverage new EPR funding, and apply field‑tested engagement tactics.

 

Participants will gain:

  • A behavioral framework for shaping resident recycling habits

  • Practical tools to increase participation and reduce contamination

  • Guidance on using upcoming EPR funding to improve programs

  • Access to new research, resources, and community success stories

  • Hands‑on activities and peer learning opportunities

Recycling staff from local/state agencies, haulers, MRFs, nonprofits, consultants, and anyone working on education, outreach, or program implementation.

SWANA Founding Chapter Annual Meeting
& Program Highlights

A dynamic day designed to inform, inspire, and connect California’s solid waste and recycling professionals.

Kick off with our Annual Chapter Meeting, led by our President Haley Kunert, followed by a powerful deep dive into Edible Food Recovery: What Happens After the Donation. Hear directly from Bracken’s Kitchen and Abound Food Care as they reveal how rescued food is transformed into community impact. This 60‑minute session offers real insight into the systems, partnerships, and innovations driving California’s food recovery movement—plus an optional field trip to see operations in action.

Continue the momentum with a Deep Dive into EV Trash Trucks, featuring Republic Services’ Operations Technology Team. Learn about emerging vehicle technologies, safety considerations, and the evolving legislative landscape—along with an opportunity to view an EV truck up close during lunch.

​

The afternoon includes a focused update on Safety in the Industry, followed by a timely briefing on the OC Landfill Agreement from the City Manager Christopher Macon with the City of Laguna Woods.

There will be a chance to tour Bracken's Kitchen after the event, limited space is now FULL
